Malcolm Keif


Residence: San Luis Obispo, CA

Dr. Malcolm G. Keif is a Professor in the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo. His current teaching responsibilities include courses in Flexography, Quality Management, and Cost Estimating. He has been in the printing industry for more than thirty years and has focused his career on various aspects of color reproduction, quantifying printing systems, manufacturing efficiencies, and performance excellence in printing. Recently, Malcolm has researched and developed functional printing applications, particularly related to conductive inks for sensors, traces and other printed electronics applications. Malcolm serves as the graduate coordinator for the department’s master’s program.

Malcolm oversees instruction in flexographic plating and press operations at Cal Poly, with emphasis on narrow-web printing applications. In 2004, he was selected as the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation’s Educator of the Year. Under Malcolm’s direction, Cal Poly has been recognized multiple years as Harper Flexo College of the Year recipient and winner of the Phoenix Challenge College competition. Malcolm served on the board of the PINC/Western Flexo Label Association, was active in the development of the Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications and Tolerances (FIRST). He was also a member of the prestigious Intertech Award selection committee for PIA/GATF for five years.

Prior to his involvement in the flexographic industry, Malcolm worked for both high-quality heat-set web and sheetfed offset printing companies. In 1986, he joined ColorGraphics, a Los Angeles, Calif. headquartered company (now part of the Cenveo network of companies), where he was responsible for planning production and estimating costs associated with large commercial printing accounts. He has served as a judge for the Printing Industries of Florida and the Printing and Imaging Association of MidAmerica Print Excellence Awards, and the SAPPI Fine Paper Printer of the Year award committee. All of these focus on the best offset printing in the country.

Malcolm is an active researcher, consultant, and speaker on matters related to flexography, offset printing, functional printing, quality systems, lean management, cost estimating, and general graphic arts processes. He is the author of more than 100 articles, papers, and presentations and three books: Setup Reduction for Printers, Lean Printing: Pathway to Success, and Designer’s Postpress Companion.

Malcolm has provided training and consulting services for numerous well-known graphic arts companies including AGFA Corporation, Vertis Corporation, New England Business Services, Signature Offset, ColorGraphics, Label Impressions, Hallmark Cards, Avery Dennison, and conducted workshops through FTA, VMA, PIASC, PIASD, PIA-MidAmerica, and PIA, and PPI. He has presented at many national and international conferences and events.

Malcolm holds three degrees in Graphic Communication and Education including a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri in Vocational Technical Education with a concentration in Technology Teaching. His Masters degree is from California State University at Long Beach, where he studied printing in the Industrial Arts Department. Dr. Keif’s Bachelors of Science degree in Graphic Communication is from Cal Poly.
